Thirty years ago, Community Senior Services (CSS) provided the first multi-city dial-a-ride program in the country. From its humble beginning of a borrowed van and volunteer drivers, Get About Transportation provided 107,000 rides for seniors in 2006. In addition to this flagship program, CSS has developed and effectively implemented 10 more programs and services designed to promote self-sufficiency, independence and a higher quality of life for the aging population. They are: Senior Companion Program, Senior Help Line, Family Caregiver Support Program, The Enrich ment Center Adult Day Program, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Senior Services Alliance (SSA), Senior Resource Directory, Facilitators for Change A Life Foundation, RSVP Travel and distribution of timely information through the monthly newsletter, Valley News.
Since our inception, the CSS Board of Directors has focused on obtaining outside sources of funding, primarily government contracts (over $8 million) because board members felt strongly about not competing for local financial support with other non-profit organizations in the area. However, public funding is extremely limited now and potential futu re funding is in question as federal, state and county dollars previously designated for social services continues to diminish. Our list of individuals waiting for services continues to grow, and, without diversifying our sources of funding, the continuation of many of our existing services will not be possible.
